This was driving me nuts - the For Realtek, for example, before SP2 restarting the computer meant nearly always the driver being uninstalled by the OS. But the speakers are soundless et the microphone run. System message: banned is the interface.

Also due to the great amount of security they place it this Vista system, most drivers’ wont work. I have a Toshiba p105-s9722 and have installed vista ultimate 64 bit a couple months ago. No sound from the internal speakers but micro, headset and SPDIF work correctly...
In case you have purchsed the Vista Retail cd's then you would require the drivers to be downloaded from the website. So I phoned directly the HP support center and they said that they were aware of this issue and, at the moment, no drivers should be expected! Then install SP2 and use the system fro a few days, then install all of windows updates. then i tried XP driver for the dame HDA Device and it worked. lol... good luck!
